Stay inside a unique, Mongolian-style but 100% Canadian-made yurt, on a beautiful working farm in Apple Hill, Ontario. Located just 1.5 hours west of Montreal, 50 minutes south of Ottawa and 20 minutes north of Cornwall and the U.S. border, Springfield Farm is close to city conveniences and yet a world away.

The off-grid yurt sits on more than 100 acres of land, surrounded by fields and the pretty Beaudette River that runs through the property. With no electricity inside the yurt, you’ll have no trouble reconnecting to nature. When you arrive, you’ll be welcomed by hosts Finbarr McCarthy and Eleanor McGrath who are happy to give you a tour of their organic regenerative farm and answer your questions.

Your home for the night is 226 square feet of space in a circular, open concept design. An antique double bed and a retro Danish small cot are provided for cozy sleeping, best for two adults or two adults and one child. Battery-powered LED lights are provided for your nighttime needs. Spend the evening gazing at the stars (the night sky is magnificent in the country) and wake up in the morning to the songs of birds welcoming the day. This is glamping at its best.

Guest Access:

You will have access to the gardens, which are awash with beautiful flowers all summer long. In the fall, the property has a stunning array of autumn colours. And in the quiet of winter you can borrow snowshoes to trek across the fields and through the Managed Forest trail. A short walk from the yurt is a repurposed wooden shed that houses a small mini-fridge, microwave, coffee maker and outlets for charging devices. A briquette BBQ with a chimney is available for cooking meals and a small picnic table is provided upon request. On beautiful days, we recommend you take the light chairs from inside the yurt out to the deck to enjoy the beautiful view.

In the fall, when heat is needed, there is a small wood-burning stove that warms the space and provides plenty of ambiance. Wood is provided by your hosts. A portable outhouse is also provided. There is no running water as this is glamping but your hosts do provide bottled water, water for coffee/tea and they will provide clean dishes/cutlery as required. The outdoor shower is serviced with water heated only by the sun — it is refreshing and only recommended for warm-weather guests.

Local attractions:

Springfield Farm is in the heartland of Ontario’s first settlements. The Mohawk Nation of Akwesasne is located approximately 30 minutes south of the farm, on the beautiful St. Lawrence Seaway. Here you will find shopping, dining and a fun casino experience. In September, the Mohawk Nation hosts the Akwesasne International Pow-Wow that’s not to be missed. Rural communities such as Apple Hill, Martintown and Alexandria offer small-town warmth, antiquing, great local cafes and architectural history. Maxville hosts the annual Highland Games and in Williamstown, you’ll be able to enjoy the annual fair, which is the oldest in Canada! Stay at the Yurt and bike, hike or drive to explore the birthplace of Ontario.

Landsby is a Preferred Partner with VIA Rail – take the train to Cornwall or Alexandria and your transfers to and from the farm are included! Contact us to add your rail tickets.

M Eleanor McGrath

Finbarr McCarthy and Eleanor McGrath raise their four children in Toronto, while being challenged by their organic farming life in Apple Hill, Ontario. In January 2014, they purchased Springfield Farm – an over 200-year-old farm of 118 acres in the small hamlet of Apple Hill, Ontario in South Glengarry. They have worked hard to establish Springfield Farm in the growing AgriTourism/Local Food economy as an “Environmental Farm Oasis.” They are active members of local agricultural groups focused on the needs of small farmers and organics, along with hosting two consecutive years of the “Doors Open”, supporting Beyond 21, and membership in the Ontario East British Home Child Family association. Springfield Farm works in partnership with ALUS Canada, the Raisin Region Conservation Authority, SARPAL, Managed Forest Programme, and proud members of the Canadian Organic Growers. And after four years of growing the farm business, we are proud members of the OFA! Eleanor is a member of the Cornwall Standard-Freeholder Community Editorial Board and the regional representative for the Ontario Barn Preservation Society. A great honour for Eleanor was being chosen as the South Glengarry Citizen of the Year 2018, and then receiving the 2019 SDSG Service Award.
