Day 1: Edmonton to Jasper

There’s no need to worry about driving on winter mountain roads on this getaway as all your transportation needs are covered. You’ll be picked up from the Edmonton airport and head out on the scenic drive to Jasper National Park, in the heart of the Canadian Rocky Mountains. Look out for wildlife sightings along the way.

You;ll step into a magical winter wonderland at the Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge, a classic wilderness mountain retreat set on 700 private acres. Here you can engage in classic Canadian winter activities – such as skating on frozen Lake Mildred or cross country skiing on one of the groomed trails in the sprawling resort grounds – or just curl up with a good book by one of the fireplaces and enjoy the view.

Day 2-5: Explore Jasper

At 11,000 square kilometres, Jasper National Park is the largest park in the Canadian Rockies and a part of the designated Rocky Mountain UNESCO World Heritage Site. During the winter months, the park is arguably at its most scenic, with forests lightly dusted in snow set against the soaring mountains. And as a bonus, the park’s most popular attractions are quieter and more peaceful in the winter.

During your stay in Jasper, you’ll have plenty of free time to explore at your own pace or relax and enjoy the amenities of the Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge, which includes a full-service spa, amazing dining options and plenty of scenic spots to snap photos and enjoy the views.

You will be treated to three special guided outings that showcase the best of Jasper:

• See Jasper’s wild fauna on the Winter Wildlife Discovery Tour. As you head out into the Jasper wilderness with your guide, you’ll not only get a chance to see some of Canada’s most iconic wildlife but you’ll also experience the most amazing scenery in the region’s Athabasca Valley. Learn about the ways these animals contribute to the rich diversity of the National Park as you search for elk, deer, moose, wolves, coyotes and goats. Photo opportunities are plentiful on this tour.

• Take a walk on the wild side as you head down into the frozen Maligne Canyon – the deepest accessible canyon in Jasper National Park – to explore frozen waterfalls, ice caves and spectacular ice formations. The Ice Walk is one of the most sought after experiences in Jasper and a must-see when in the region. Your guide will also teach you about the unique Karst topography of the region and the mystery of the ‘disappearing’ Medicine Lake. An unforgettable winter experience.

• Why just explore the town when you can do a food tour instead? Learn about the history of the Jasper townsite while tasting delicious offerings from top area restaurants. This 3-hour walking tour covers 1.5 kilometres and stops at four eateries where you’ll get to indulge in hand-selected dishes paired with alcoholic beverages. You’ll be delighted by the quality and ingenuity of the food offerings in such a remote mountain town. Epic views guaranteed.

As Jasper National Park is the world’s second largest Dark Sky Preserve, it is an incredible place to indulge in stargazing without light pollution. The dark skies of winter present a great opportunity to see the wonders of the night sky and if the conditions are right, you might even get a chance to see the incredible Aurora Borealis.
