Growing up in Kanata, a suburb of Ottawa, I watched the city evolve from a quieter capital to a vibrant and bustling hub of culture, food, and outdoor adventure.
Though I’ve since moved away, Ottawa remains a place I cherish, and every visit back is a journey of rediscovery.
Join me as I take you through 24 hours in my hometown, blending old memories with new experiences.
Morning: A Strong Start
My day always begins with a workout. For me, it’s a crucial way to set the tone for the day, whether it’s hitting the courts for a game of tennis or breaking a sweat at The Strength Collective 613, a go-to gym in the west end.
The energy and focus I gain from these sessions are unmatched.
After my workout, I keep things light with a quick protein shake. This routine has been part of my life for as long as I can remember, and it allows me to fully indulge when it’s time for brunch or lunch, a meal I always look forward to.
Mid-Morning: Dim Sum and Brunch Delights
In my family, the mere mention of brunch usually meant one thing: dim sum.
Ottawa’s Chinatown offers a fantastic array of dim sum spots that are perfect for a laid-back, satisfying meal. The vibrant flavours and communal nature of dim sum always bring back fond memories.
But Ottawa’s brunch scene doesn’t stop there. When I’m not craving dim sum, I often find myself at spots like Wellington Gastropub, Miss Molly’s Diner, Wilf & Ada’s, or Cantina Gia.
Each of these places has its own unique charm, offering everything from classic comfort food to innovative takes on brunch staples.
And if I’m in the mood for something quick and comforting, I’ll swing by one of Ottawa’s many ramen joints or grab a couple of bánh mì sandwiches to go. There’s never a bad time for ramen, especially when it’s chilly outside and you need something to warm you up.
Afternoon: Exploring the City’s Hidden Gems
What I do after brunch depends largely on the season, as Ottawa offers a wide range of activities year-round. In the winter, I love to lace up my skates and hit a local ODR (outdoor rink) for a game of pick-up hockey.
The sense of community and the crisp winter air make it an unbeatable experience.
If I’m in need of some relaxation, a spa day at Nordik Spa-Nature in Chelsea is always a good idea. Just a short drive from downtown, this tranquil retreat offers a perfect escape from the cold.
And, when I’m looking to delve into history, the Canadian War Museum remains one of my favourite spots, a place where I can lose myself in the stories of history.
Summer, however, is my favourite time to be in Ottawa. The city comes alive with outdoor patios, farmers markets, and events, and I often find myself enjoying a leisurely afternoon on Elgin Street or in the ByWard Market. A stroll down Westboro or The Glebe for some window shopping is also a must, especially when the weather is warm.
If I’m feeling adventurous, I’ll head out to Carp or even further for some fishing or take a hike in the Gatineau Hills. Carp is also home to Kin Vineyards, an amazing vineyard that’s well worth a visit. And while you’re in the area, don’t miss a tour of the Diefenbunker, a fascinating Cold War museum that’s a real hidden gem.
When it comes to food, The Cheshire Cat Pub in Carp offers a cozy spot with great food and drinks, and if you’re craving classic Canadian fare, Pong’s Poutine is a must-visit.
Evening: Ice Cream & Cocktails
No visit to Ottawa would be complete without a stop for ice cream. Brett’s Ice Cream in Kanata is a local favourite, and when I’m downtown, Moo Shu Ice Cream on Bank Street is my go-to spot. Their inventive flavours and commitment to quality always impress.
As the evening rolls in, it’s time to explore Ottawa’s underrated dining scene. The city may be small, but its food culture is mighty.
For those in the mood for cocktails, places like Stolen Goods, The Moonroom, Ward 14, Union 613, and Bar Guapo offer a fantastic selection of drinks in unique settings.
If I’m in the mood for beer, Bar Lupulus is an easy choice. They boast an impressive range of beers, along with excellent cocktails and fun, flavourful dishes.
For wine lovers, Arlo is an all-time favourite of mine, with Fauna and Soif (Gatineau) also offering exceptional wine lists.
When it comes to dinner, Ottawa’s options are endless. For an upscale experience, I recommend Supply & Demand, Coconut Lagoon, Stofa, North & Navy, Whalesbone, Raphael, Gitanes, Cameline (Gatineau), Atelier, or Perch.
Each of these restaurants offers something unique, whether it’s a focus on local ingredients or a creative culinary approach.
For more casual dining, spots like Cantina Gia, Torta Boyz, Heartbreakers Pizza, Gitanes Burger, Retro Gusto, Smash Daddy, Curry Leaves Food Truck, and Little India Cafe provide delicious meals in a relaxed atmosphere.
Late Night: Pool & Performance
After dinner, I often find myself gravitating towards one of my favourite activities, playing pool.
McLaren’s on Elgin or the Orange Monkey are my go-to spots. There’s something about the friendly competition and laid-back vibe that makes these places perfect for unwinding after a busy day.
If you’re more in the mood for some culture, catching a show at the National Arts Centre (NAC) is a fantastic way to end the evening. The NAC’s lineup of stage plays and musicals is always top-notch, and the venue itself is stunning, a true gem in Ottawa’s cultural landscape.

Ottawa has grown and evolved significantly since my childhood days in Kanata.
Yet, every time I return, I’m reminded of the city’s unique blend of tradition and innovation, its welcoming spirit, and its vibrant community.
Whether I’m savouring a favourite dish at a local restaurant, exploring a new spot, or simply enjoying the natural beauty that surrounds the city, Ottawa will always be home, a place where memories are made and where I’ll always find something new to love.
