With more than 900 km of shoreline and a vast network of trails, Ontario’s southernmost region makes for a scenic retreat for those looking to reconnect with nature. On this 3-day getaway, including rail from Toronto (or optional car rental), you’ll have plenty of time to take in the area’s charms while staying at the centrally located Retro Suites Hotel, a boutique accommodation with an artsy interior.
A highlight of the trip is the immersive 3-hour Spirit Horse Encounter, during which you will be introduced to the Ojibway culture through storytelling, music and time spent in the company of therapeutic Spirit Horses.
Landsby is a Preferred Partner with VIA Rail – Return economy class rail from Toronto (or other Ontario cities, a fare difference may apply) to Chatham is included in this package.
Check into the Retro Suites Hotel for a two-night stay in a premier suite. Centrally located in historic downtown Chatham, this boutique hotel is a one-of-a-kind accommodation that is part hotel and part modern art gallery. You’ll enjoy photographing the quirky interior as you discover new charms around every corner. The onsite restaurant serves delicious comfort cuisine, such as buttermilk fried chicken and wild mushroom ravioli. You just have to step out the door for more dining options and lots of great shops in the downtown core.
Exploring this region is easy from Chatham and there are plenty of places to see within half an hour, including amazing sandy beaches and forest hikes.
Spend some time on a stroll along the charming pier in the community of Erieau on the shores of Lake Erie and check out the pretty lighthouse. In the warmer months, you’ll fine Erieau has a bustling seaside feel with waterfront dining, a stunning beach and a busy marina. In the colder months, you’ll be able to enjoy a quiet stroll with unobstructed views of the icy lake.
Also nearby is Rondeau Provincial Park, which has some of the best birdwatching and hiking around.
The highlight of this stay, however, is sure to be a visit to the nearby Indigenous-owned farm for an unforgettable three-hour immersive experience with the beautiful Ojibway Spirit Horses. Thought to be the only existing breed of horses developed by the Indigenous people of Canada, Spirit Horses once roamed these parts of Ontario freely. Visitors will gather around a fire to hear stories passed down by generations of First Nations and learn about their deep connection to these spiritual animals.
This is an authentic local experience created by First Nations people, as they pass down their history and their ways. The sound of traditional drums and fiddles will stay with you long after you’ve gone home. An overnight stay in an onsite authentic tipi can be added on to this experience.
We look forward to welcoming you to this incredibly rich experience.
The Spirit Horse encounter is not available on Sundays
