Explore rich heritage and beautiful scenery on a 9-day road trip around Georgian Bay. This coastal route stops at some of the most spectacular spots around the Bay and allows for plenty of time to take in the views and learn about the history of the area.
Visit Manitoulin Island, the largest freshwater island in the world, canoe and walk the forest trails with local Indigenous guides, see famous shipwrecks and ride the MS Chi-Cheemaun Ferry or tour the North Channel on a guided cruise. On this comprehensive road trip, you’ll also visit Sudbury’s famous underground museum, tour among the 30,000 islands, and experience the awe-inspiring beauty of Killarney.
DAY 1: TORONTO TO FRENCH RIVER
Drive north from Toronto to Parry Sound on Georgian Bay. Tour the 30,000 islands on the Island Queen. From Parry Sound, continue to French River. Overnight at Crane’s Lochaven Wilderness Lodge.
DAY 2: FRENCH RIVER PROVINCIAL PARK
The French River Visitor Centre tells the stories of this historic waterway in the “Voices of the River” exhibit hall. Hike the Recollet Falls trail along the river gorge. Drive along scenic Highway 69 to the Town of Killarney. Overnight at the iconic Killarney Mountain Lodge.
DAY 3: KILLARNEY PROVINCIAL PARK
Visit Killarney Provincial Park. With its quartzite ridge tops, turquoise lakes and pristine forests teeming with plant and animal life, it is known as the crown jewel of the Ontario Parks system. Stop at the Visitor Centre where friendly volunteers will assist you with planning your hike. Swim, play tennis, canoe or relax at Killarney Mountain Lodge. Overnight at Killarney Mountain Lodge.
DAY 4: KILLARNEY TO SUDBURY
Visit the town of Killarney and hike the Lighthouse Trail to the Killarney East Lighthouse – a historical landmark. Travel to Sudbury along Highway 69, past pristine forests and rivers. Tour Dynamic Earth – an underground mining museum; visit Science North. Overnight in Sudbury.
DAY 5: SUDBURY TO MANITOULIN ISLAND
Travel through the La Cloche Mountains across the Little Current 104-year-old swing bridge. Learn about Aboriginal culture and history on an afternoon adventure with the Great Spirit Circle Trail. Overnight at the Manitoulin Hotel.
DAY 6: MANITOULIN ISLAND
Explore the North Channel, islands and nearby points on a cruise. Participate in a cultural learning experience. Or tour the island, visit charming communities, and stop at the Meldrum Bay Inn for lunch and spectacular views. Overnight at the Meldrum Bay Inn, or return to Little Current.
DAY 7: MANITOULIN ISLAND TO TOBERMORY
Board the MS Chi-Cheemaun Ferry for a scenic trip across Georgian Bay to Tobermory, at the tip of the Bruce Peninsula. Explore the town of Tobermory Tour shipwrecks; visit Flowerpot Island aboard a glass-bottom boat. Overnight in Tobermory.
DAY 8: TOBERMORY TO BLUE MOUNTAIN RESORT
Head southeast towards Collingwood Blue Mountain, with stops in communities and towns along the route. Arrive at Blue Mountain Resort, on the Niagara Escarpment overlooking Georgian Bay. Cycle, hike or bike the many trails, golf, or explore the village. Overnight at Blue Mountain Resort.
DAY 9: BLUE MOUNTAIN RESORT TO TORONTO
Visit Scenic Caves Nature Adventures. Try the treetop walk, zipline eco-adventure tour, and explore the ancient caves. Stop in Collingwood for lunch. Drive from Collingwood to Toronto.
