Dive into the sugary world of maple syrup on a culinary road trip in Ontario’s Highlands. This five-day getaway includes accommodations, most meals and plenty of hands-on fun.
From guided walks and delightful farm tours to interactive workshops, this road trip will take you through Ontario’s sugar maple forests to meet the farmers, makers and producers of the province’s maple syrup industry. The trail showcases not only the cultural heritage of maple syrup but the many delectable ways the sugar maple enhances cuisine, beverages, and the Canadian lifestyle.
The Sugar Maple Trail was established to celebrate Canada’s 150th Sesquicentennial as a one-of-a-kind taste trail! Ontario’s Highlands boasts outstanding sugar maple forests managed and operated by dedicated maple syrup producers that have passed on the art of sugaring off throughout several generations. The trail showcases not only the cultural heritage of maple syrup but the many delectable ways the sugar maple enhances cuisine, beverages, and the Canadian lifestyle.
DAY 1: ARRIVAL
Transfer east and north into the beautiful farm country of Kawartha Lakes. Meet the owner of South Pond Farms for a walking tour of a lush organic, heritage farm. Learn about the significance of the sugar maple for early settlers and its use in culinary practices. Lunch, a la carte or picnic. Participate in a culinary workshop. Transfer east over rolling hills of Northumberland. Arrive, check in to Elmhirst’s cottage resort. Enjoy some free time prior to dinner, a la carte at the Hearthside Dining Room.
DAY 2: MAPLE HERITAGE
After breakfast, enjoy a sustainable farm tour. Check-out, transfer east to Westben Concerts at the Barn for lunch and matinee show (July only). Then continue north through towns and villages of Hastings County and continue east. Enjoy a picnic lunch at Sharbot or Silver Lake Provincial Park. Continue transfer enter Lanark County, Maple Syrup Capital of Ontario! Visit Wheeler’s Maple Heritage Museum, a showcase of maple syrup-producing artifacts. Continue east and south to the heritage town of Perth. Arrive, and check-in BW Plus Parkside Inn & Spa OR The White House for dinner and overnight.
DAY 3: PARKS & SUGAR MAPLE BUSHES
After breakfast, enjoy a walking tour of Stewart Park and the oldest settlement town in Canada! Check-out, transfer northeast, en route visit one of a kind distillery OR chocolate factory in the mill town of Almonte OR visit a Textile Museum. After lunch, continue to transfer north into rural Ottawa Valley, and observe farm sugar maple bushes. Stop-in village of Pakenham, discover Ontario’s oldest operating General Store! Arrive, check-in The Whitewater Inn OR BW Pembroke Inn & Conference Centre for dinner and overnight.
DAY 4: MAPLE SYRUP
After breakfast, transfer and visit local maple syrup producers for a walking tour and taste sampling. Check-out, transfer west into rolling hills of the beautiful Madawaska Valley. After lunch, continue to transfer west, take in scenic viewpoints. Arrive, check-in private cabin at Spectacle Lake Lodge. You will have free time prior to dinner and overnight.
DAY 5: MAPLE EXPERIENCE & DEPARTURE
After breakfast, hike the local trail to a lookout. Check-out, transfer southwest to participate in a Maple Experience and learn the art of making your own maple syrup. As an alternative, participate in Spirit of the Trees at Gaia’s Den with Karen Moonbeam. After lunch, commence transfer return to Toronto with a maple souvenir.
