Canada is a country of immense distances, distinct seasons, and remarkably different landscapes. A journey through the Rockies feels nothing like a road trip along the Atlantic coast. Wildlife viewing in the North follows a different calendar than harvest season in wine country. What you experience depends as much on when and how you travel as where you go.

That's why custom travel builds a journey around your interests, your travel style, your pace, and the experiences you hope to have along the way.

Our team helps connect the places and experiences that make a trip personal, seamless, and meaningful.

What is Custom Travel?

Custom travel is a personalized approach to trip planning that builds an itinerary around the traveller rather than asking the traveller to fit into a pre-designed itinerary.

Every journey begins with a simple question: What kind of experience are you looking for?

Custom travel is often confused with luxury travel or escorted touring, but the two are not the same.

Custom travel is not a rigid group tour, a fixed itinerary with little flexibility , or one-size-fits-all package.

Instead, it's a collaborative planning process that creates a journey suited to your goals, interests, and budget.

Who is Custom Travel For?

Families & Multi-Generational Groups

Travelling with multiple generations often means balancing different interests, energy levels, and accessibility needs. A custom itinerary helps create an experience that works for everyone.

Special Interest Travellers

Culinary travellers, wildlife enthusiasts, photographers, train travellers, hikers, birders, and cultural explorers often benefit from itineraries designed around specific interests.

Milestone Trips

Significant birthdays, anniversaries, retirement celebrations, and bucket-list adventures often deserve more thoughtful planning than a standard package can provide.

Slow Travel

Some travellers would rather spend four nights in one place than four nights in four places. Custom travel creates opportunities to experience destinations more deeply rather than simply passing through them and checking them off a list.

How Planning With Landsby Works

Planning a custom journey starts with a conversation. We want to understand how you want to travel, what your goals are for the trip, and any special considerations.

Whether you have a clear destination in mind or are still exploring possibilities, our travel designers help shape your ideas into a practical and meaningful itinerary.

Step 1: Consultation

Over a phone call or video call, we learn about:

  • Your travel goals
  • Preferred travel style
  • Budget range
  • Travel dates
  • Group size
  • Previous travel experiences
  • Experiences you hope to prioritize

This helps us understand not only where you'd like to go, but what kind of trip you're hoping to have.

Step 2: Destination & Experience Planning

Once we have an understanding of your travel goals and style, we begin recommending destinations, routes, accommodations, and experiences.

At this stage, we also help evaluate what's realistic within your timeframe and how different regions compare.

Step 3: Building the Itinerary

Next, we create the structure of the journey. This includes:

  • Accommodations
  • Transportation
  • Connections between destinations
  • Activity planning
  • Timing and pacing
  • Logistics

One of the most important aspects of custom travel is knowing what not to include.

Trying to fit too much into a trip often leaves travellers spending more time moving than experiencing.

A well-paced itinerary allows each destination to feel rewarding rather than rushed.

Step 4: Refinement & Personalization

Travel planning is collaborative.

Once the initial itinerary is prepared, we work together to refine details. The itinerary evolves until it reflects exactly how you'd like to travel.

Step 5: Travel Preparation

Once everything is confirmed, we prepare you for departure.

Travellers receive:

  • Detailed travel documents
  • Transportation information
  • Supplier contacts
  • Seasonal travel guidance
  • Practical travel tips

And should questions arise before or during travel, our team remains available to help.

Why Canada is Different

One of the biggest surprises for visitors is just how large Canada really is.

Driving from Toronto to Winnipeg, just one province over, takes nearly 24 hours. A flight between Vancouver and Halifax covers more than 4,000 kilometres. Some of Canada's most extraordinary experiences require small aircraft, boats, trains, or seasonal roads to access.

Canada is also a highly seasonal destination.

The best time to view polar bears is different from the best time to hike in the Rockies. Whale watching seasons vary by coast. Fall colours arrive at different times depending on the region. Some remote lodges operate for only a few months each year.

Successful trip planning requires understanding how geography, transportation, and seasonality work together.

A thoughtful itinerary considers:

  • Travel distances
  • Transportation options
  • Seasonal timing
  • Regional differences
  • Activity availability
  • Time needed to experience each destination

This is often where custom travel creates the most value.

Planning Across Canada:
Distances, Timing, & Pacing

One of the most common itinerary mistakes is trying to see too much. Because Canada is so large, thoughtful pacing often creates a better experience than adding more destinations.

Good pacing allows travellers to:

  • Spend more time exploring
  • Reduce travel fatigue
  • Enjoy spontaneous discoveries
  • Minimize hotel changes
  • Better connect with destinations

Common Planning Mistakes include trying to visit too many regions, underestimating driving times, and overbooking activities.

Four Practical Planning Tips

1. Booking in Advance. Many of Canada's most sought-after experiences have limited availability. As a general guideline, plan summer travel, rail travel and Aurora (northern lights) experiences at least 6 months in advance, and even longer for better availability. For wildlife lodges where the seasons for viewing are short, expect to book at least a year in advance.

Earlier planning typically provides the widest range of options.

2. Budget Expectations. Custom travel can be tailored to a wide range of budgets depending on accommodation styles, transportation choices, activities, seasonality and destinations. During our initial consultation, we will help you set a realistic budget based on your needs.

3. Domestic Flights. Canada's size often makes domestic flights a practical part of longer itineraries. Prices can vary widely, but booking early generally provides more flexibility and better pricing.

4. Weather Variability. Conditions can vary significantly between regions and seasons. Layering clothing is often the best approach. We also highly recommend renting winter clothing at the destination if you are travelling to northern Canada during the winter season. This allows you to save budget space, and you get the security of knowing the clothing is climate-appropriate.
