Experience Yellowknife by day and the Northern Lights in three different ways by night. Over four nights, explore the city, then head beyond its lights for Aurora viewing from a cozy cabin, a heated SkyDome, and a third experience of your choice.
With free time built in, you can also add dogsledding, a cultural experience, or more time to explore Yellowknife at your own pace
Below is a sample itinerary. The actual itinerary may vary based on weather conditions and availability.
DAY 1: ARRIVE IN YELLOWKNIFE
Welcome to Yellowknife. After arriving at the airport, make your way to your hotel using the complimentary hotel shuttle and settle in for four nights in the Northwest Territories capital.
The rest of the day is yours. Depending on your arrival time, explore downtown, choose a local restaurant for dinner, or simply get settled before the next few days of northern adventure.
Accommodation: Explorer Hotel (or similar)
DAY 2: DISCOVER YELLOWKNIFE & A COZY CABIN UNDER THE STARS
Today you'll join a local guide for an introduction to Yellowknife. Stops can include the Northwest Territories Legislative Assembly, the Bristol Freighter and Welcome to Yellowknife sign, Buffalo Airways hangar, Nature's North Wildlife Gallery, and historic Old Town. During the winter months, weather and conditions permitting, the tour may also venture onto the ice road or visit the Snowcastle.
Tonight, leave the city lights behind for your first Aurora experience. Your destination is a cozy cabin where you can move between the warmth indoors and the night sky outside as you wait for the Northern Lights. A midnight lunch featuring fish chowder and fresh bannock adds a distinctly northern touch to the evening.
Accommodation: Explorer Hotel (or similar)
DAY 3: YELLOWKNIFE AT YOUR OWN PACE & SKYDOME AURORA VIEWING
Enjoy a relaxed day in Yellowknife. Wander through Old Town, explore local shops and galleries, or add an optional daytime winter experience.
After dark, you'll head out again, this time for a different perspective on the northern sky. The SkyDome provides a heated viewing base where you can stay comfortable between trips outside to watch and photograph the Aurora.
Accommodation: Explorer Hotel (or similar)
DAY 4: A FINAL DAY IN THE NORTH & YOUR CHOICE OF AURORA EXPERIENCE
Your final full day is open for exploring or adding another northern experience. Go dogsledding across the winter landscape, learn more about Dene culture and traditions, or simply enjoy more time in Yellowknife before your last night beneath the northern sky.
Tonight, choose your third Aurora experience:
Aurora Fireside
Available Thursdays through Mondays from January 7 to April 5. Spend the evening at a heated basecamp on Joliffe Island on Great Slave Lake, with a fire, hot tea, bannock, and the ability to move in search of clearer skies when conditions call for it.
Aurora Hunting Tour
Rather than waiting for the Aurora to come to you, head out with a local Indigenous-owned operator in search of favourable skies. The route changes according to weather and Aurora conditions, creating a more mobile viewing experience.
Aurora Village
Settle in at an established Aurora viewing destination outside the city, where dark skies and purpose-built facilities provide another way to experience a northern night.
Accommodation: Explorer Hotel (or similar)
DAY 5: DEPART YELLOWKNIFE
Enjoy a final morning in Yellowknife before making your way to the airport using the complimentary hotel shuttle
