Take a break from the ordinary on this regenerative focused winter getaway to Whitehorse and Dawson City. Spend three nights in the one-of-a-kind Black Spruce eco cabins and have the freedom to roam Whitehorse with your own transportation. Visit the newly renovated Eclipse Nordic Hot Springs, see Yukon’s unique wildlife and check out local viewing spots in search of the Northern Lights.
Then head North to Dawson City, famous for its central role during the Klondike Gold Rush. You’ll get to experience the quirky culture of this cool northern city during a time when few tourists are around. Meet the locals for a drink at the bar, try your hand at snowmobiling or join a guided tour to see the magnificent Tombstone Territorial Park.
Day 1-3: Explore Whitehorse & Area
Arrive in Whitehorse, pick up your rental car at the airport, and enjoy the freedom to explore the area at your own pace.
Modelled after the famous Juvet Landscape Hotel in Norway, the Black Spruce cabins are a unique environmentally focused accommodation in the outskirts of Whitehorse. Located just a few minutes from the airport and the city centre, the cabins offer a different style of lodging from local hotels. Here you can stay in a fully contained passive solar cabin made from rough cut local Yukon spruce while being within a short drive of all the best restaurants, bars and attractions in Whitehorse.
With three nights in the Black Spruce cabins, you’ll have plenty of time to appreciate all the cool features, such as the Shou Sugi-Ban siding (a Japanese technique of treating wood by burning), the cedar sauna that was cleverly built around existing boulders and is heated by a Finnish wood stove, and the rocky cliffs and forest of the adjacent park. Spend your days relaxing in the cozy cabin, visiting eclectic Whitehorse and exploring the vast northern landscape.
Your stay includes a visit to the recently renovated Eclipse Nordic Hot Springs (adults only), located about 30 minutes from Whitehorse, where you can rejuvenate in ancient mineral springs and enjoy amenities inspired by Scandinavian and Japanese Onsen healing practices. You’ll also have admission to the nearby Yukon Wildlife Preserve, where you can observe northern wildlife such as elk, Canada lynx, thinhorn sheep, wood buffalo, and muskox.
In the evenings, head out to try some of Whitehorse’s best restaurants for dinner (we highly recommend the Wayfarer) and then drive out of town a bit to catch the Aurora Borealis on clear nights. You can join an optional Aurora viewing tour or visit some of the local favourite Northern Lights viewing hotspots on your own.
This northern getaway is perfect for those looking to travel independently and enjoy staying in one-of-a-kind accommodations. The proximity to the city and all of its amenities is a huge bonus especially during the winter months. The Black Spruce cabins are about 45 minutes from Carcross, which makes for an easy and scenic day trip.
Day 4-6: Explore Dawson City & Area
Return your rental car and catch your flight to Dawson City. Once you arrive, you’ll be transferred to Dawson Lodge, your hotel located in the heart of downtown. With easy access to local attractions, it’s the perfect spot to immerse yourself in the rich history and natural beauty of the Yukon. The Lodge offers comfortable accommodations with a touch of rustic elegance, featuring well-appointed rooms designed for relaxation. Start your stay with a visit to the Lodge’s renowned Yukon Spa, where you can enjoy access to Canada’s northernmost day spa.
On your first evening, embark on a guided Northern Lights Tour, departing between 10:00 and 11:00 pm. Your guide will take you to a prime viewing location for an unforgettable experience. After the tour, you have private access to the spa from 11:00 pm to 2:00 am for further northern lights viewing opportunities.
Use your Yukon Spa Pass to indulge in the spa’s amenities at your own pace. Relax with a 30-minute facial and a 30-minute massage (or any combination of treatments up to one hour). You can extend your treatments at an additional cost (subject to availability)
Explore Dawson City and choose from several optional tours: the Parks Canada Walking Tour, which includes admission to the local museum for an in-depth look at the town’s cultural and historical significance; or the City and Goldfields Tour, a guided excursion highlighting the city’s historic sites and the renowned Goldfields, integral to the Klondike Gold Rush.
Alternatively, join the Tombstone Park Day Tour, a 6-7 hour excursion featuring a scenic drive, guided exploration of stunning landscapes, and a delicious lunch amidst the park’s rugged peaks and tundra. For an exhilarating experience, opt for the Snow Machine Adventure, a 3-4 hour ride through Dawson City’s winter trails, complete with a warm lunch.
Day 7: Return to Whitehorse
Transfer from your hotel to the airport for your flight back to Whitehorse. Upon arrival, enjoy one last evening in the Yukon’s capital. You can choose to embark on an additional aurora tour (optional) for another chance to view the Northern Lights.
Day 8: Departure
Use the hotel shuttle to transfer to the airport for your flight home, bringing an end to your unforgettable Yukon adventure.
