Itinerary/Overview

Below is a sample itinerary. The actual itinerary may vary depending on weather conditions, and guest preferences. If you have chosen a longer duration, please enjoy additional days at the Lodge.

DAY 1: ARRIVAL IN YELLOWKNIFE, GATEWAY TO THE NORTH
Your northern winter adventure begins with your arrival in Yellowknife, the vibrant capital of the Northwest Territories. After collecting your luggage, take the complimentary hotel shuttle and check in to your accommodation. The rest of the day is yours to settle in, get acquainted with the city’s unique northern charm, and prepare for the extraordinary journey ahead.

Accommodation: Explorer Hotel (or similar)

DAY 2: SCENIC PLANE FLIGHT TO BLACHFORD LAKE

This morning, take a short taxi ride (at your own expense) from your hotel to the ski-plane base. Around 10:00 AM, board a bush plane for a spectacular 25-minute flight over the snow-covered wilderness to Blachford Lake Lodge. Touching down on the frozen lake, you'll step into a true winter wonderland surrounded by boreal forest and vast, untouched landscapes.

After settling into your cozy lodge room or private cabin, enjoy a chef-prepared lunch and begin exploring your surroundings. The lodge offers a welcoming retreat with warm indoor spaces and breathtaking views. In the afternoon, participate in your first guided winter activity or head out on your own to explore using the seasonal equipment available at the lodge, such as snowshoes, cross-country skis, fat bikes, or skates.

As night falls, indulge in a delicious dinner and then prepare to witness one of nature’s most awe-inspiring sights. With a 98% chance of Aurora visibility during a three-night stay and no surrounding light pollution, your chances of seeing the Northern Lights are exceptional. Whether you relax in the outdoor hot tub, warm up in the sauna, or gather in the Aurora lounge, this is the perfect setting for unforgettable viewing.

DAYS 3–4: WINTER ADVENTURE AND AURORA VIEWING

Each morning begins with a hearty breakfast and the peacefulness of the frozen north. You will enjoy two guided activities per day, carefully tailored to make the most of the season and setting. From snowshoe hikes through boreal trails and cultural crafts to nature interpretation and Aurora photography instruction, there is something for every interest.

When not participating in guided activities, you can explore at your leisure. The lodge offers over 25 kilometers of groomed trails for skiing and snowshoeing, as well as gear for fat biking, skating, and kick sledding. Ice fishing and snowmobiling are also available (additional cost). Fishing licenses must be purchased prior to arrival.

Evenings are a time to relax and rejuvenate. Enjoy a three-course meal crafted by the lodge’s chef, then settle in for another night of Aurora viewing. Whether from the comfort of the lounge, beside a crackling bonfire, or while soaking in the hot tub under the stars, the experience is one you won’t soon forget. Lodge staff provide Aurora watch service until 3:00 AM so you never miss a moment.

DAY 5: RETURN TO YELLOWKNIFE AND CITY DISCOVERY

After a final breakfast and time to enjoy one last quiet moment on the lake, you’ll board the return bush plane to Yellowknife, arriving around midday. Upon your return, transfer to your hotel (on your own) and enjoy the afternoon at your leisure.

This is the perfect time to explore Yellowknife’s cultural and historical highlights. Visit the Prince of Wales Northern Heritage Centre for an engaging look at the region’s Indigenous cultures and natural history. Or spend you day browsing local art galleries filled with Indigenous artwork and handcrafted northern goods.

Accommodation: Explorer Hotel (or similar)
