DAY 1: ARRIVE IN HALIFAX

Arrival at Halifax Stanfield International Airport marks the start of your Nova Scotia journey. Pick up your rental car and drive about 35 minutes into downtown Halifax, where your centrally located hotel places you within easy walking distance of the city’s historic harbourfront.

Halifax sits on one of the world’s largest natural harbours, and the waterfront boardwalk stretches nearly four kilometres along its edge. Spend the afternoon settling in and exploring at your own pace. Browse small shops, visit maritime landmarks, or pause at a café overlooking the harbour. Dinner tonight is on your own in a city known for fresh Atlantic seafood, lively pubs, and relaxed coastal dining.

Accommodation: Lord Nelson Hotel & Suites (or similar)

DAY 2: HALIFAX EXPLORATION OR COASTAL DAY TRIP

Halifax rewards a day of unhurried exploration. The city blends centuries of maritime history with an easygoing coastal energy. Historic stone warehouses, lively pubs, and a strong local food scene give the harbourfront its distinctive character, and the compact downtown makes it easy to explore on foot. Walk the boardwalk along the harbour, browse galleries and small shops, or visit landmarks such as the Halifax Citadel or the Canadian Museum of Immigration at Pier 21.

If you feel like venturing beyond the city, consider a scenic drive along Nova Scotia’s South Shore to the town of Lunenburg. Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site, its colourful waterfront buildings and preserved 18th-century town plan reflect the province’s early maritime heritage. Return to Halifax in the evening for another chance to enjoy the city’s restaurants and lively waterfront.

Accommodation: Lord Nelson Hotel & Suites (or similar)

DAY 3: HALIFAX TO MABOU

Leave Halifax this morning and begin the drive toward Cape Breton Island. The route carries you through Nova Scotia’s rural landscapes, where small towns, farmland, and coastal views mark the transition from the province’s urban centre to its quieter countryside.

Cross onto Cape Breton Island and continue to the village of Mabou, one of the cultural centres of Cape Breton’s Gaelic heritage. Check in at Glenora Inn & Distillery, set beside the Mabou River. This evening includes a backstage tour and tasting at Glenora Distillery, recognized as North America’s first single malt whisky distillery. Later, you may wish to visit the nearby Red Shoe Pub, founded by the Rankin Family, where live Cape Breton fiddle music often fills the room and locals gather for an authentic community evening.

Accommodation: Glenora Inn & Distillery (or similar)

DAY 4: THE CABOT TRAIL TO INGONISH

Today’s journey introduces one of Canada’s most scenic coastal drives. The Cabot Trail winds along the northern edge of Cape Breton Island, where forested highlands rise steeply from the Atlantic and the road curves past fishing villages, river valleys, and dramatic ocean viewpoints.

The route from Mabou to Ingonish passes through Cape Breton Highlands National Park, where some of the trail’s most spectacular scenery unfolds. Clifftop lookouts reveal sweeping views of the coastline where the highlands drop sharply into the Atlantic. Take your time along the way, stopping at scenic viewpoints or short walking trails to appreciate the dramatic landscapes before arriving in Ingonish later in the afternoon.

Accommodation: Keltic Lodge at the Highlands (or similar)

DAY 5: CAPE BRETON HIGHLANDS NATIONAL PARK

Cape Breton Highlands National Park unfolds around you today. Forested mountains, deep river valleys, and rugged coastline define this protected landscape along the northern edge of the island. More than two dozen hiking trails wind through the park, offering everything from short coastal walks to longer routes that climb into the highlands.

The day is yours to explore at whatever rhythm suits you. Walk a coastal trail overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, spend time on Ingonish’s sandy beaches, or pause at scenic lookouts where the mountains meet the sea. Optional experiences include whale watching excursions along the coast or a ride on the Cape Smokey gondola, which rises above the shoreline for sweeping views of the Atlantic and surrounding highlands. Return in the late afternoon with time to relax before dinner.

Accommodation: Keltic Lodge at the Highlands (or similar)

DAY 6: INGONISH TO BADDECK

This morning continue along the Cabot Trail as the route leaves the highlands and turns inland toward the sheltered waters of Bras d’Or Lake. Along the way, consider a detour to the Fortress of Louisbourg National Historic Site, one of the largest historical reconstructions in North America. The restored 18th-century French fortress offers a glimpse into colonial life, with reconstructed streets, homes, and harbour defenses overlooking the Atlantic.

By afternoon you arrive in Baddeck, a welcoming lakeside village on the shores of Bras d’Or Lake. This inland sea, recognized as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, offers a quieter landscape of sheltered waters and rolling hills. Stroll along the waterfront, browse small shops, or visit the Alexander Graham Bell National Historic Site, which tells the story of the inventor who made Baddeck his summer home.

Accommodation: Inverary Resort (or similar)

DAY 7: BADDECK TO HALIFAX

Leave Cape Breton this morning and begin the drive south toward Halifax. The route winds through Nova Scotia’s rolling countryside, passing farmland, forests, and small rural communities along the way.

As you travel across the mainland, consider a detour toward the Bay of Fundy, home to the highest tides in the world, where the ocean can rise and fall by as much as 16 metres between low and high tide. Shoreline viewpoints along the Minas Basin provide opportunities to witness this remarkable natural phenomenon before continuing on to Halifax.

By late afternoon you return to the city for your final evening. Take time for a last stroll along the harbourfront or enjoy a farewell seafood dinner overlooking the water.

Accommodation: Lord Nelson Hotel & Suites (or similar)

DAY 8: DEPARTURE FROM HALIFAX

Your Nova Scotia journey concludes this morning. Drive to Halifax Stanfield International Airport and return your rental car before your onward flight.

If time allows before departure, consider a final walk along the harbourfront or a relaxed breakfast at a local café before leaving the city
