3 Romantic Towns To Visit In Ontario This Winter

Winter is a wonderful time to plan a romantic getaway with your significant other. Cozy accommodations, the romance of a glowing fire and the joy of a snow-covered world outside are all top reasons to book a stay at one of Ontario’s scenic and spectacular small towns and villages. We’ve rounded up three of our favourites and we are certain that you will find these destinations the perfect opportunity to unwind and reconnect with your loved one.

Don’t forget to keep your receipts from these Ontario adventures! The new Ontario Staycation Tax Credit means you will get a 20% refund on accommodations costs when you file your taxes next year.

Westport

The quaint village of Westport is nestled in a scenic valley on the shores of Upper Rideau Lake. The historic downtown is a pleasure to explore, with an array of little shops, cafes and restaurants. What makes this a perfect winter stop is nearby Foley Mountain, an 830-acre conservation area that offers all kinds of fun winter activities. Bond over an easy hike to the Spy Rock lookout (from which you can see the whole of Westport and the Upper Rideau Waterway) or head out for a snowshoe walk through the pristine forests. In the evening, take in live music at the famous Cove Inn, which makes for a terrific 2-or 3-night stay.

Westport is located 1 hour north of Kingston or 1.5 hours south of Ottawa.

Gananoque

Best known as the Gateway to the Thousand Islands, Gananoque is a small South Eastern Ontario town that sits along the banks of the St. Lawrence River. While it is a popular destination in the summer, we think Gananoque is a stunning place to visit in the winter too. Internationally recognized as one of the province’s most stunning waterfront communities, this lovely town offers breathtaking views of the Thousand Islands archipelago and the lovely meandering Gananoque River. We highly recommend this lovely getaway right in town that combines gourmet dining with an exhilarating flight over the icy St. Lawrence.

Gananoque is located approximately 20 minutes east of Kingston, easily accessible by car off Highway 401 or by VIA Rail.

Paris

You don’t have to travel overseas to experience a little romance in Paris. Ontario’s version, while much smaller than its French counterpart, turns into a fairytale town in the winter months. Picture church spirals dusted with snow, sparkling rivers edged with ice and a cozy downtown. Nestled as it between the Grand and Nith Rivers, picturesque Paris is made for strolling hand in hand with your sweetheart. The unique shops, cafes and restaurants, many of which overlook the beautiful rivers, only add to the charm. If you love architecture, you will enjoy the cobblestone home and churches that helped Paris earn the title of the Cobblestone Capital of Canada. And if nature is your thing, enjoy Barker’s Bush, a network of beautiful nature trails that starts off in Lion’s Park. We love this overnight adventure that combines a stay in the luxe Arlington Hotel with a guided hike through the local forests, which feature rare Carolinian trees, tall-grass prairie and a chance to spot wildlife. A perfect romantic getaway.

For a more rustic adventure in the area, try our Grand River Cabin & Hike Getaway located in Chiefswood Park Six Nations. You’ll stay in a cozy pine cabin and go on a guided hike with a local guide.

Paris is located 45 min west of Hamilton or 1 hour east of London.
